On the basis of a diagram in the manuscript of the 15th c. English mystery play, the Castle of perseverance (Washington, DC, Folger Shakespeare Library, MS V.a.354), reconstructs the theater where the play was held, a circular space surrounded by a trench; argues that in form and function it represents the ideal Medieval theater, which rediscovered the round form of the archaic pagan theater.
