Abstract (en)
On the recently cleaned Pentecost attributed to Giotto in the National Gallery, London, and the six dispersed scenes associated with it: Nativity and Epiphany (New York, Metropolitan Museum); Presentation (Boston, Gardner Museum); Entombment (Florence, Villa I Tatti); and three panels in the Alte Pinakothek, Munich. Concludes on the basis of technical evidence that these constituted a single horizontal altarpiece in dossal format. Notes Riminese aspects of the design and iconography, and suggests that the work may have been commissioned from Giotto by Malatesta da Verucchio in 1311/12 for the high altar of S. Francesco in Rimini.
