Abstract (en)
Presents new documents establishing the building dates of the Barbadori chapel (Florence, S. Felicita) as 1419-1423; and surveys arguments concerning the chapel's architecture and the iconography of frescoes executed by Pontormo when the Capponi assumed patronage (1525). Proposes that the chapel was created by Brunelleschi as a tabernacle recalling a portico, to enshrine an existing Trecento fresco of the Annunciation on the facade wall. Argues that the Annunciation is an integral part of Pontormo's iconographic program, and reexamines the Pietà and lost frescoes in this light. Includes a reconstruction of the appearance of the chapel in the 15th c., and an appendix with Barbadori family documents.
