Examines a sketch by Leonardo of a woman's left hand on the fingerboard of a lute, on fol. 13 v-b of the Codex Atlanticus (Milan, Biblioteca Ambrosiana) in relation to a group of paintings by his followers, exemplified by the Portrait of a Lady attributed to Bartolomeo Veneto (Malibu, J. Paul Getty Museum), all based on an unknown lost prototype.
