Study of 11th and 12th c. castles in Hampshire, both as a symbol of ownership and as structures and forms of settlement set within their landscapes, achieved through the combination of fieldwork and the study of air photographs, maps and documentary sources. Includes discussion of the various morphological and locational aspects of each site, together with evidence of early ownership, origins and functions. Appended gazetteer.
