Presents documents concerning the ceiling decorations by Pietro da Cortona in S. Maria in Vallicella, Rome. Argues that the main theme of the program is the intercession of the Virgin and Christ, inspired by the Counter-Reformation doctrine of salvation and responding to fear of Divine Wrath manifested in the plague. Indicates frescoes by Federico Zuccari in the Gesù (Rome) as a precedent, and discusses plague iconography and the cult of S. Carlo Borromeo as a plague-saint. (Appendix with documents.)
