Critical examination of American earthworks of the late 1960s and early 1970s, by Smithson, Heizer, Holt, and others; proposes that they manipulated nature in ways and for reasons that had nothing to do with the landscape, and that their works were often too personal for the public domain. Finds Smithson an exception.
