Argues that the cycle of the production and consumption of images and information has generated less and less conventional meaning, and that a cynical art has emerged in response to this in the 1980s. Explains why cynicism has been ineffectual, and proposes alternatives in dealing with the new world of simulation, in which images are no longer anchored by representation.
