Demonstrates that Herman Melville's 1857 The Confidence-Man: His Masquerade was a political pantomime analogous to contemporary caricatures or prints. Argues that there is a far closer, more extensive match than has hitherto been suspected between word and image, lampoon and cartoon, verbal and visual caricatures.
