Abstract (en)

Interprets Paula Rego's imagery, focusing on her paintings of the 1980s shown in a recent exhibition devoted to Rego at the Serpentine Gallery, London (15 Oct-20 Nov 1988). Cites in particular a series of new paintings, Heroic Handmaidens, which celebrate the daughters and sisters of the heroic men who are conventionally the subject of history painting.
