Finds a compensatory aspect in Alberti's attraction to antiquity and architecture, in his adoptive name, Leone, and in the iconography of his emblem, the winged eye. Includes a postscript extending the author's interpretation of Alberti's personality to support James Beck's recent attribution to Alberti of the astrological fresco of the cupola of the Old Sacristy (Florence, S. Lorenzo).
