Essay written on the occasion of an exhibition, Behind the sign, Artspeak Gallery, Vancouver, CAN (10 Sept-1 Oct 1988), which presented recent collaborative works by Canadian artists and writers. Describes Ferdinand de Saussure's theory of the sign, its subsequent development in the concepts of structuralism and post-structuralism, and the use of these linguistic analogies as a basis for contemporary artmaking.
