Argues that the portrait of Luís de Camões acquired by the Comissão Nacional para as Comemorações dos Descobrimentos Portugueses is a faithful copy, executed 1819-1844 by Luís José Pereira de Resende, after a lost portrait in red chalk by Fernão Gomes. Dates the original 1573-1579, and argues that it was intended as a model for an engraving to accompany an edition of the Lusíadas. Traces the probable history of the drawing and the provenance of the copy.
