On the architectural complex built by the Portuguese bishop at the mouth of the Douro river (Foz do Douro) after 1527. Argues that he was influenced by Italian Renaissance humanist aesthetics, the classical ideal of the port city, and especially the ruins of Ostia. Surveys the subsequent history of the Castelo de S. João da Foz, its degradation in the mid-20th c., and current efforts to restore it following the author's discovery of elements of the original church of S. João da Foz.
