Discusses a 17th c. Portuguese illustrated manuscript on shipbuilding, the Livro de traças de carpintaria by Manuel Fernandes, 1616 (Lisbon, Biblioteca da Ajuda). Argues that the text and its 266 watercolor illustrations, all of a technical nature, represent the results of a lifetime of experience and the author's intention of making a record for the future rather than a manual for contemporary shipbuilders. Places the work in the context of the history of writings on naval architecture. (Notes that the manuscript has recently been published by the Academia da Marinha, Lisbon.)
