On the iconography of the Portuguese empire, including personifications of the continents and elements, allegories of victory and the Christian faith, and allusions to navigation and conquest, in the decorations (sculpture and painting) of Baroque ceremonial coaches used by Portuguese ambassadors to France and the Vatican in the 17th and 18th cs. (The coaches, made in Portugal and Rome, are in the Museu Nacional dos Coches in Lisbon.)
