Abstract (en)

On the significance of the armillary sphere as the personal device of Manuel I, and as the symbol of empire, Christianity, unification of the world, and the centralism of royal power. Presents numerous examples from early 16th c. architecture, including the Convento de Cristo in Tomar, the Mosteiro dos Jerónimos in Lisbon, and the castle of Torres Vedras.
