On the basis of documents and a surviving panel of the Creation of Man still in the church of S. Julião in Setúbal, studies the original retable of S. Julião, here identified as a large polyptych by Gregório Lopes, commissioned by the Master of Santiago Jorge de Lencastre, and executed 1525-30. Documents cited here cast light on the replacement of the altarpiece for liturgical reasons after 1615 and the reuse of some of its panels in a new altarpiece designed by the architect Baltazar Álvares.
