Abstract (en)
Surveys the career of the bishop of Viseu, Miguel da Silva, his participation in the humanist culture of Rome and Florence, and the impact of his patronage in introducing Renaissance culture into Portugal. Focuses on architectural works of Francesco da Cremona in Foz do Douro (especially Capela de S. Miguel-o-Anjo and S. João da Foz), and Viseu (Paço de Fontêlo and the cloister of the cathedral). Proposes that the bishop aimed to recreate S. Peter's (Rome, Vatican) at Foz do Douro and an ideal princely court in Viseu. Gives an account of the known works of Francesco da Cremona, from his documented activity in S. Peter's, 1514, to his later career in Portugal; includes new attributions.
