Studies the representation of the pregnant Madonna in Portugal, 14th-18th cs., in relation to the cult of the Virgin, the feast of the Annunciation, and the realistic depiction of the Visitation. Argues that the pregnant Madonna is neither a pagan survival nor a uniquely Iberian invention. Examples considered are mainly sculptures.
