Traces the urban development of the Medieval square of S. Martinho, Leiria, noting its double function as a religious center and marketplace; and analyzes changes imposed when Leiria became a bishopric and the first bishop, Brás de Barros, made an exchange of property with the municipality (1546; document transcribed here) as part of an overall plan for the city, which led to the destruction of the church, the enlargement and regularization of the square (now Praça Rodrigues Lobo), and transformation of its function.
