I: Surveys the reception of Latin American art in the United States and especially Europe in the 20th c.; identifies and analyzes obstacles that still prevent its complete acceptance. II: Discusses the exhibition, Les magiciens de la terre, held in 1989 at the Centre Pompidou and La Villette in Paris, focusing on its inclusion of art and ritual objects from the Third World. Argues that the exhibition inevitably revealed European ethnocentrism.
