Analyzes Worringer's contribution (in Abstraktion und Einfühlung, 1908) to the development of aesthetic criteria applicable to all works of art, not merely those of the classical European tradition. Examines the new conditions of artistic production in the 20th c.; and discusses the present status of art criticism, aesthetics, and the relationship between the two.
