Abstract (en)
Presents detailed documentary evidence concerning the remodeling and decoration of the royal chapel of the Paço da Ribeira in Lisbon in the 1740s, after its designation as metropolitan and patriarchal cathedral by Clement XI (1716) and not long before its destruction in the earthquake of 1755. Principal evidence comprises plans drawn after the earthquake and drawings made in Rome, 1743-44 (Lisbon, Museu Nacional de Arte Antiga) for the baptismal font and grilles. Draws attention to the chapel's role in Jõao V's policies and to its links with Rome and the Vatican, and names numerous Italian artists involved in the decorations.
