Abstract (en)

Attempt to analyze and explain aspects of 19th c. ornament in terms of contrasting ideological positions, tracing these back to the disruption of culture by positivism which, by undermining the basis of metaphor, renders traditional symbolism invalid. Seeks to understand why there should have been a debate about the decorative arts, and what meaning the choices of ornamental style might have entailed. Concerned principally with architectural ornament.
