Wide-ranging discussion based on the premise that J.-J. Rousseau was the first "to establish the preconditions enabling rusticality to be elevated to an aesthetic category with the dual misunderstanding that one could assimilate nature via the rural population and use rusticality as the key to the door, so to speak." Contrasts Rousseau's view with that of Diderot who spoke of rural life as an enterprise.
