Notes two aspects of modernism in Yugoslavia, international and indigenous, and focuses on the role of the periodical Zenit (founded 1921 by Ljubomir Micić), which sought to uphold new values that were consistent with both national (or Balkan) identity and international developments. Examines the representation of Expressionism, Constructivism, and Dada in Zenit; comments briefly on Micić's support for Bolshevism; and traces links between Zenit (which was based in the Serbo-Croatian centers of Zagreb and Belgrade) and the avant-garde in Slovenia. Finally, discusses cultural trends reflected in reviews published in Ljubljana.
