Examines the issue of misogyny in relation to the critical literature on Edgar Degas, 1886-present, focusing on recent writings which displace, project or attempt to deny the difficulties of his imagery. Asserts that these difficulties involve questions of the politics of looking and representation as well as psychoanalysis and sexuality, areas which need further study for a true understanding of Degas. Notes with surprise that these issues were not treated in the catalogue for the 1988 Degas retrospective exhibition.
