Survey of the history of Portuguese gardens, Roman to 20th c., noting the impact of the importation of plants and trees from the colonies, 16th-18th cs.; followed by discussion of 39 individual gardens, 16th-20th cs., in the various regions of the Portuguese mainland and the islands of Madeira and the Azores. Subjects include landscape architecture and gardens of royal palaces and country houses; botanical gardens; and parks and public gardens. Examples range from the early Renaissance garden at Quinta de Bacalhoa (Azeitão) and the Baroque gardens of the Palácio de Queluz to the Romantic garden of Monserrate (Sintra) and the Art Deco garden of Casa de Serralves in Porto.
