Abstract
(en)
Study of the painting (Paris, Louvre) commissioned by Laerzio Cherubini for his private chapel in S. Maria della Scala, Rome. Supports a date 1601-1602 and proposes that the picture was rejected before 1605 for failure to conform to Carmelite Mariology. Examines the iconography in light of the requirements of patronage, spirituality, and public purpose involved in the commission; particularly, relates the figure of the Magdalen to the function of the Casa Pia, a pious institution for women supported by Cherubini and the Discalced Carmelites of S. Maria della Scala. Appendix with documents regarding Cherubini (wills of 1602 and 1622) and the Casa Pia (1597-1609).
