Abstract
(en)
Weitzmann argues that the Dura painters (ca.244-256) based their compositions on lost illustrated manuscripts of the Septuagint, and demonstrates that such manuscripts must have served as the foundation of Christian Bible illustration. Kessler considers the program and structure and concludes that the frescoes are a response to Christian claims against the Jews and were intended to reassure the congregants in Dura that the historic covenants remained intact and the Messianic prophecies yet to be fulfilled.
