Abstract
(en)
Studies the late 17th c. church of Nuestra Señora de la Soledad as a synthesis of European Catholic teachings and Mesoamerican religion. Focuses on the iconography presented in the retablo facade (and continued throughout the church), which broadcasts the message of Christian salvation in images from European sources, so selected, juxtaposed, and conflated as to correspond to pre-Hispanic beliefs about the continuation of life on earth.
