Abstract
(en)
Examines the history of the National Mall in the period 1791-1852, when it was the site of a series of public and botanical gardens; presents evidence from drawings by Jefferson, L'Enfant, Latrobe, Mills, and Downing showing that the Mall was conceived as a significant symbol of the nation in the first years of its existence.
