Abstract (en)
Exhibition presenting the Lute Player by Caravaggio (private collection; on loan to the Metropolitan Museum of Art), newly identified as the autograph Del Monte version of the subject. The Giustiniani version from the Hermitage in Leningrad is also shown, as are other recently identified works by Caravaggio for Cardinal del Monte: the Fortune Teller (Rome, Pinacoteca Capitolina) and the Cardsharps (Fort Worth, Kimbell Art Museum), together with 17th c. instruments and paintings from the Metropolitan Museum collection representing musicians with instruments.
