Detailed documentation of the feast of the cult of the Holy Spirit in Penedo in the 19th and 20th cs. The feast comprises the slaughter of a bull, the coronation of the child-emperor, and a banquet for the poor. Discusses the origin and diffusion of the cult in Portugal and its colonies; traces the origin of the cult in Penedo to the 18th c., and examines the rituals, decorations (in N.S. das Mercês and the village square), costume, sacred and decorative arts objects, and the institutions and practices associated with the feast. Appendices with tables and documents.
