Examines the question whether Francisco Manuel de Melo, in his text of 1657, referred specifically to S. Mamede in Janas or generally to churches dedicated to S. Mamede and the ritual blessing of cattle sometimes associated with these. Concludes that the reference is general, and discusses the cult (dating from the 11th c.) and churches of S. Mamede, as well as ex-votos and representations of the saint, 15th-19th cs., in Portugal. (Provides a list and map of 65 churches and chapels.)
