Focuses on Jan van Eyck's portrait painting of Cardinal Albergati (Kunsthistorisches Museum Wien), the underdrawing, and the preparatory drawing (Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden, Kupferstichkabinett). Suggests that detailed drawings like the one in Dresden were needed in case of the absence of the sitter during the actual painting of the portrait.
