Argues that the dress of female sitters in Dutch portraiture is not necessarily the same as that worn in reality. The so-called "antique", or "Roman dress" depicted ca.1670-1730 is derived from the portrait costume introduced by van Dyck in his portrait paintings. Later in the 18th c. it became more and more fashionable to be portrayed in a dress that was actually worn.
