Abstract (en)

Reviews evidence for the 12th and 13th cs., assessing political and social significance. No clear-cut distinction can be made between Norman-type and Irish-type fortifications, and some earthworks hitherto taken as evidence of Anglo-Norman settlement are more likely to be of Irish origin and may even pre-date the arrival of Anglo-Normans.
