Abstract (en)
Examines two mayoral swords with silver hilts owned by the city of Dublin. The Great Sword, engraved probably by Herman van Cleve, ca.1390-1399, with devices and inscriptions personal to Henry IV, identify it as one of the king's own swords presented to the city in 1403. The King's, or City Sword, is a composite, dating mainly from the 17th c., by Dublin goldsmiths. Appendices publish documentary references to the swords, and biographical notes on Dublin goldsmiths, 17th to 18th cs.
