On stylistic grounds, attributes to Dürer a drawing dated 1515 representing a standing figure in armor (West Berlin, Kupferstichkabinett). The drawing is inscribed "ottoprecht fürscht" and apparently represents the shadowy figure of Ottoprecht, said by Maximilian I's genealogists to be the missing link between the Hapsburgs and the Merovingian kings. Author suggests Dürer's drawing is a previously unknown study for an unrealized sculpture--a further standing figure among the group of Maximilian's ancestors modeled for the emperor's monument in the Hofkirche, Innsbruck. Compares the drawing to completed sculptures for the monument by Peter Vischer and Hans Leinberger.
