Abstract (en)

Stresses the importance of the influence of the frescoes in S. Francesco, Assisi, by Giotto (and to a lesser extent the Sienese); traces the spread of the Franciscan order in the Marche in the 13th and 14th cs.; and relates the development of the Riminese school of painting to the presence of S. Francis and the Franciscans in the Marche. Cites examples of churches dedicated to S. Francis (e.g. Mercatello sul Metauro) and decorated with works by the Riminese school.
