Argues that the choice of cards depicted in Caravaggio's Cardsharps (Fort Worth, Kimbell Art Museum) and in 17th c. scenes of gambling and cheating at cards signifies misfortune and impending violence; cites a treatise on fortune-telling by Court de Gebelin, Recherches sur les tarots et sur la divination par les cartes de tarot.
