Discusses the iconoclastic debate in relation to 20th c. art. Elaborates on Jack Burnham's view that the trajectory of art history follows the path charted by ancient Jewish mystics in the Kabbalah. In this connection cites the work of Marcel Duchamp and the recent political art of Leon Golub, Nancy Spero and Group Material.
