Abstract (en)

Discusses Meyer Vaisman's paintings, their sources and meaning, and his "Live Sculpture" (performing monkeys Mary and Charly), featured at the 1989 Vaisman exhibition at the Jablonka Gallery, Cologne. As a point of comparison, describes Francis Picabia's "live picture", a work of anti-art included in a Dada event in Paris in 1920, which consisted of a toy monkey encircled by the inscription Portrait de Cézanne, Portrait de Rembrandt, Portrait de Renoir, Natures Mortes. Argues that Vaisman and Picabia share a "ruthless wit, relentless charm and a strong sense of outrage."
