Paper presented at Mountain Lake Symposium IX in Pittsburgh (18-20 Nov 1988). Presents a selected inventory of feminist subjects, focusing on just a few women artists and three themes: the female body, especially the part standing for the whole; make-up and mimicry; the made-up narrative. Cites Christina Ramberg's paintings of headless female torsos; Nancy Bowen's sculpted heads, vessels, and torsos; the narrative paintings of Ida Applebroog and Hollis Sigler; Jeanne Dunning's photographs and Judy Ledgerwood's paintings, both involving mimicry and faking. Notes parallels between regionalism and feminism--both conditions of marginality and otherness.
