Describes the intention and scale of the recent exhibition, Bilderstreit: contradiction, unity and fragmentation in art since 1960, held at the Rheinhallen, Cologne. Argues that this juxtaposition of post-1960 European and American art, featuring some 1000 works by 127 artists, was too ambitious an undertaking and ultimately failed.
