The director of the J. Paul Getty Museum, Malibu, CA, sets forth the Getty Museum's acquisitions policy, especially with regard to the ethics of collecting antiquities, in reply to an article by Albert Elsen in this journal ("An outrageous anomaly," summer 1989, p. 196) which charges that museums should be required to disclose the identities of the seller and the seller's source when acquiring a work of art.
