Analyzes the eclectic style and unusual theological program of the Romanesque manuscript, the Gospels of Heinrich der Löwe, 1188 (Wolfenbüttel, Herzog-August-Bibliothek). Argues that the program reflects current political circumstances and Heinrich's personal ambitions by taking as its theme the working of God's will in history through the faithful, including Christian princes. In this way will fallen Man be redeemed.
