Presents Bellicard's illustrated account of his travels in Italy with Marigny (then Vandières), in a previously unidentified notebook in the Metropolitan Museum, New York; and draws attention to its importance as the earliest illustrated description of the archaeological finds at Herculaneum. Includes an appendix on the publishing history of Bellicard's Observations sur les antiquités de Herculanum, which was based on this notebook.
